The Deputy National President of Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria (EHOAN) Dr. Nuhu Solomon Anyegwu has advised that a massive campaign and sensitisation excercise should begin nation wide to  prevent the scourge of the disease,Lassa fever across the country.



Speaking against the backdrop of a renewed outbreak of Lassa fever in the country, Dr. Anyegwu who is also the Provost of College of Health Sciences and Technology, Idah in kogi state has advised all environmental health officer in the college, various local government across the country to immediately re-embark on massive awareness campaigns aimed at controlling the spread of Lassa Fever within the state and Nigeria as a whole.


He advised citizens to imbibe good sanitation and hygiene practices and take preventive and control measures which he said, included “keeping their  environment clean always to avoid rodents; keeping food away from rodents; storing grains and other foodstuffs in rodents proof containers and disposing of wastes regularly and far away from homes. ”

Other measures suggested, were, “Cooking all foods thoroughly; blocking rat hideouts, washing of hands regularly with soap and running water as well as using protective equipment like masks, gloves, gowns among others in healthcare centres.

Dr Anyegwu, equally enjoined citizenry to avoid or stop eating rats as much as possible, calling on government and relevant stakeholders to equipped sanitation officers with latest equipment and apparatus capable at fighting the scourge of the disease and related ones. 

According to him, numbers of environmental officials across the country are not enough, calls for more action in this direction.

He quickly informed that environmental officers in  the College had begin saddle to  embark on sensitizing  the public on Lassa fever outbreak as well as create awareness on preventive and control measures from college  to other schools and the community as a whole.

Noting that the sensitisation will be a continuous exercise and will be taken down to the grassroots such as local communities, mosques, churches, markets, motor parks, restaurants, hotels and to other places where there is the likelihood of large gathering,” he noted.
