ONDO RECORD ANOTHER OUTBREAK OF SCHISTOSOMIASIS
There are indications that outbreak of Schistosomiasis in Irelejare community in Irele local government area of Ondo State as not less than five children have been affectedby the disease.
It was gathered that the outbreak of the epidemic was caused by poor conditions of water the people consumed in the community.
According to some residents who spoke with news men on the develpment in the areas, mr Omosehin Omopintemi and mr Akinbiola Oyedele said the community has recorded at least 5 cases of the disease among children that are now urinating blood.
According to the people, absence of portable drinkable water or boreholes has exposed the community to many environmental hazards and other water related diseases.
The bale of Irelejare Community,Chief Omokaraba Monebi appealed to the state government to urgently come to the rescue of the community before the disease went out of control
All efforts to get the reaction of Health Commissioner, Wahab Adegbenro were not successful as he did not pick calls and reply to SMSs sent to his phone as at the time of filling the report.
Also, it will be recalled that there was outbreak of similar disease recorded at Ipogun, in Ifedore local government area of the state some years back.
Schistosomiasis is a disease caused by infection with freshwater parasitic worms in certain tropical and subtropical countries.
The parasite can be found in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the Caribbean.
The fresh water becomes contaminated from infected animal or human urine or faec ites.
The parasites penetrate human skin to enter the bloodstream and migrate to the liver, intestines and other organs.
