NYSC DG CHARGES CORP MEMBERS...warns against frivolous trips

The authority of the National Youth Service Corps ( NYSC) have reiterate commitment towards well-being of all serving corps members across the federation.

The NYSC Director General (DG) Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim,  who disclosed at the NYSC  permanent orientation camp at  Ikare-Akoko area of Ondo State, that mandate he received when he was appointed as the helmsman of the noble Scheme is to protect the lives of all corps members observing their mandatory one year service to their fatherland.

In his words, "And for this singular reason, I will not rest on my oars until everyone of you here seated acts in accordance with the expectations of the NYSC management and the Federal Government of Nigeria".

General Ibrahim who spoke passionately as a father, hinted that he was not always at peace whenever he has to explain why a corps member loses his or her life during the service year.

Ibrahim posits that "I am talking to you not only as the Director General of this laudable Scheme but as a father who knows and understands very well the psychological trauma  a parents might went  through when they lose a child they have invested so much on during the service year, with the expectation then to bring glory to the family".

"Please, I am begging you to desist from making frivolous and unauthorised journeys. When the unexpected happens, I am always very sad to console and explain to parents that we have lost their son or daughter". He noted.

The  NYSC DG however vowed that any corps member who embarked on unapproved journey when caught will face the full wrath of the law in line with the Act establishing the Scheme.

Shuaibu Ibrahim happened to be the  second General with doctorate degree to head the 46 years old Scheme and also served as Military Assistant to two former Director General of the scheme between 1997 and 1999,  cautioned the members of the service corps not to expose the good image of the scheme to ridicule by misinforming the world through unguarded use of social media.

"As a nation, we know that we are passing through challenges. NYSC wants you participate in the programme so that you can proffer solutions and not to add more burden to its existence by using the social media negatively".

He charged the corps members to be ready to serve wherever they are posted  during the service year. Adding that the unity of this country lies in their hands and can only support the Federal Government by agreeing to give the very best through meaningful service to their fatherland .

The NYSC boss posits that he would not be tired at encouraging corps members to key into Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme as there lies their economic and financial emancipation after their one year mandatory service.

"Your academic qualifications are no doubt intimidating and outstanding but I want to encourage you to embrace both in-camp and post camp training of SAED to make yourself budding entrepreneurs and captains of industries in future to come soon.

"NYSC has put in place adequate measures with collaborating financial institutions such as Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Bank of Industry (BOI), Bank of Agriculture (BOA) and some commercial banks to assist corps members with take-off grants and loans with a single digit interest rate to stabilise you during and after the service year".
