DEATH OF AFENIFERE LEADER'S DAUGHTER: NIGERIANS VOICE











 The killing of Mrs Funke Olakunri, daughter of leader of the Pan Socio-cultural Organisation,Afenifere pennultimate Friday has spark many nerves across the country that time has come for the federal government and all stakeholders to live-up to expectations on various security challenges facing the country.


According to many prominent and distinguished Nigerians, the activities of the Fulani herdsmen across the country in the recent times need for caution and proper re-examination in the general interest of peace and unity of the country.


A medical practitioner  ,who is in his early fifties, Dr. Michael Oguntoyinbo recounts his experience of the olden days when the Fulani herdsmen were like friends and families then, rearing the cattles around the community with song like " malu Koko, labalaba Koko..." and the Fulanis laugh and play in response.


However in his nostalgia, noted that reverse is the case now, as the Fulani herdsmen were now more hostile than before in nature, even on a foreign land he noted.


His words, " I feels something is wrong some where, and the earlier the better our leaders check-mate the activities of these herdsmen that are gradually turning to monsters overnight in the interest of safety of all. They are not like this before".



The former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in his  letter of condolence, submitted by Prince Oyewole Fasawe and Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola to Pa Reuben Fasonranti noted  that the incident is a worrisome development in our polity, especially, at a time when all well-meaning Nigerians are preaching tolerance and political accommodation in national politics.


. Obasanjo in his words says "I must say Nigeria as a whole is diminished by the manner of Funke’s death. We deplore this dastardly act and seize this opportunity to call on governments at all levels to leave no stone unturned in ensuring that our security agents vigorously pursue and find the perpetrators of such heinous crime and make them face the full weight of the law. 





"We must, together, find solution to all acts of insecurity in the country, particularly acts of banditry, kidnapping, robbery and killing by the suspected Fulani herdsmen".The former president posited.


 Obasanjo who mourns the tragic loss of late  Funke Olakunri, assured of the sympathy and profound sorrow of many others like him who are saddened by the manner of her demise, especially as she still had a lot to contribute to the nation and her family to which she was highly devoted.


While the former president implore Pa Fasonranti to be strong for the entire family. pray that God Himself will comfort  him and sustain the whole family in this hour of painful trial. 


Speaking on the development,  Governor Kayode Fayemi  of Ekiti state described the killing of Olakunrin as a tragic lose not only to the family of the Fasorantis but to the yourba nation and the country as a whole.



Fayemi who is also the chairman of Governor's forum said that the federal government would be beckon upon to do something very urgent about the insecurity challenges in the country.



His words, "I  know Mrs Olakunrin very well as a matter of fact, she was with me three days ago before heading back to Lagos.



"So, it is a personal lose and tragic situation for us and we all own a duty to tackle this issue head long in order to rescue our people from this situation" he said.


Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, Ondo state Governor in his words when he paid a condolence visit to the bereaved nonagenarian  Reuben Fasonranti  said  " All  of us are worried and there are some measures that have to be taken and we must prevent this. 



"We must take whatever steps we want take to tackle this issue of insecurity in order not to allow this happen again.



"It is a personal lose to all of us. For now, it is like we are mourning a relative that has just passed on".

Former Governor of Ondo state, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko posits that this is despicably disturbing and this another very challenging situation in our country. We must collectively rise to this challenge 



Mimiko in his words notes that "It is  a general problem of the security challlenge that we have in this country. I think this is another very challenge that we must collectively rise  up and solve.



"I have doubt in my mind that incident like this would task the very fabric of our nation and would also require very profound political will.



"We must leverage on technology and we must definately get to the root of this matter in the interest of our nation and in the interest of the economy.



"There is no doubt about this, that this is a reminder, a wake up call that we must confront this monsters which is a major challenge". Mimiko noted.


The monarch, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi Ogunlade,  the Deji of Akure kingdom during a visit to Sokoto State recently posits that issue of community policing can be of great importance at helping to stamp-out such crimes, vices and hoodlums off the streets and corners of the communities, if the government can look inward in this direction.

While the Sultan  of Sokoto Caliphate, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar in his response , informs that politics should not be allowed to divide the people, saying the people are all one ,hence need to stand in unity.

While the monarch noted the present security challenges facing the country call for a collective efforts at tackling the issue without rancour or violence. He however condemned in totality the wanting of  killings and crisis across the country.


Adding that traditional rulers, faith leaders and all should cooperate and support at joining efforts together  making sure a stop is put to issues of insecurity across the country.


In his grief mood the nonagenarian, 
Pa Reuben Fasonranti said " Not knowing that Funke was bidding me farewell, she came here around 9am to say Baba good bye before she embarked on her journey of no return. only for me to have a call around 2pm that Funke has gone.


"All the same when President Buhari called to commisserate with me on the death of my daughter, what I told him is that he should find solution at stopping all this killings across the country".

Hon. Omolafe Adedayo, member House of Representatives representing Akure south and north federal constituency noted that is most unfortunate that the people had continually lived in fear over the unsafe situation of roads which had become a safe haven for these criminal elements to perpetrate their dastardly and heinous crime.



 According to him, "As the Representative of the good people of Akure North and South Federal Constituency, I wish to call on the Inspector General of Police and all the security agencies to rise up to the occasion of securing lives and properties. We cannot afford to live at the mercies of these rascals. The security agencies must therefore make a collaborative efforts in securing our roads.

 "As a matter of urgency, I implore the Inspector General of Police to swing into action in fishing out the perpetrator of this crime and bring them to book within the shortest time possible. The death of Mrs. Funke Olakunrin must therefore, not go in vain.


 Omolafe posits that more importantly, the  security agencies must rise up to beat these hoodlums in their game so as to ensure a free, fair and safe society. The time of evil shall surely pass.


Engr. Gboye Adegbenro, former commisoner for works, Ondo state in his condolence message to Pay Reuben Fasonranti said the death of his daughter come as a rude shock to all. Praying for great fortitude to him to bear the great loss.


According to him, the activities of the herdsmen across the country have now constitute a nuisance and threat to the peace and development the people are enjoying in the past.


Adegbenro was of the opinion that time has come, when Mr. President should use his good office and relevant government apparatus to check-mate the terrorising nature of the herdsmen in the interest of peace , stability and unity of the country. He noted.
