UNCSW63 : BETTY ANYANWU-AKEREDOLU SOLICITS MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN



The wife of the Ondo state Governor, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has again lend her voice on the need to give women across the globe a place of priority in governance and power handling.


Speaking in Akure, Ondo state capital at a stakeholders meeting on outcome of 63rd session of UN Commission on the status of Women (UNCSW63) held recently at United Nations headquarters in New York between 11-22 March,2019.



The Governor's wife use the occasion to share her experience as a first-timer at such a global meeting of who is who around the globe, noted that it is an eye-opener for her to interact and exchange ideas. Noting that Nigeria delegates, hence in subsequent meetings need to have a common voice and views at making presentations in such a meeting of magnitude.


Mrs Akeredolu who notes that the issue sexual harassment, rape taking bureaucratic bottleneck process at dealing, has been taking care by the UN women creating committee of experts to handle such cases with dispatch. And with passionate advice at upbringing children without any special or preference to male child.


She also informed the stakeholders that issue of  menstrual hygiene for female child should be see as very important when government planning for school and institutional structures, noting that unlike in the past when a female child is menstrating, finds it difficult to mingle, which she notes can affect such child physically and mentally. Advising for a proper and ideal hygiene process in such regards. While  appreciating Information Centre Technology (ICT) as gender neutrality, she calls for more Women participation in this regard for a better world.


The wife of the Governor informs on the issue of power balance at home, work and governance was extensively discussed by the UN. Secretary General, Antonio Guterres and all other females delegates at the global meeting, sharing one experience or the other, noting that few women were allowed to take  elective positions in Nigeria, despite the large number of votes coming from the women. Saying need for such trend to change.


Mrs Akeredolu in her words  "On power balance at home, work and governance: my favorite quote - power is not given, power is taken - UN. Sec. Gen, female head of states shared their experiences, Eastern Europe has a fair share of Presidents and prime minister. That we need more women at the decision making tables cannot be over-emphasised"


"Here in Nigeria, we are embarrassingly too few considering our population and the fact that more women come out to vote,so we have the voting power, let's use it and put more women in the legislative Houses and in positions of authority".


Adding that part of deliberation at the UN meeting was giving economic empowerment  as one of such way at bringing knowledge, financial stability and self-worth and that it gives woman confidence. While she solicits with the government at all levels to give solid financial empowerment to women as a verile way to build the nation, informing about such opportunities in Ondo state like FOWOSO, an initiative by the wife of the Governor that has empowered over 2000 women and youth in the state, as Her Excellency appreciates the state government for been supportive.


Good will messages were given at the occasion, from distinguished women personalities like Prof. Ibiyinka Ogunlade, from Ekiti state University, Ado - Ekiti, Prof. Atalabi of College of Medicine, Ibadan amongst other.
