2019 WOMEN'S DAY : GENDER INEQUALITY BANE TO NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu
As Nigeria women join their counterparts globally to celebrate this year international women's day, Ondo state first lady has identified gender inequality as one major bane to the national development.
Speaking at this year, 2019 international women's day celebration in Akure, capital Ondo state, Arabinrin Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu said little wonder the country has not made sustantial progress in national development, due to inequality.
The Ondo State first lady noted that , although gender equality is a great catalyst for sustainable development, hence women in Nigeria continue to live as second class citizens in a male dominated Society.
In her words " Although gender equality is a great catalyst for sustainable development,wome w continue to live as second class citizens in a male dominated Nigeria. Little Wonder the country has not made substantial progress in national development.To change this undesirable narrative, conscientious efforts must be made towards empowering women".
The Governor's wife who advocates for women empowerment as one of the basis at stamping-out gender inequality in our society and at all level of governance.
She posits that gender based inequality remains a challenge in many parts of the African continent, as this year international women's day, themed "Balance for better" tell us that the world become a better place when there is gender balance across the socio-economic spectrum.
The guest Lecturer at the occasion, Professor Mrs Olayinka Ogunsuyi, from the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) said there is need for " Balance Better advocacy for women", is adopted for the collective reflection ,action plans and implementation in governance and at all level of the society.
However, she said consequent upon a deep reflection on the fundamental meaning of the theme and its enormous importance to national development, simplified the theme through a lecture she titled" Inspiring Women For Greater Inclusion".
While good will messages were presented at the occasion from various groups and bodies like Custom service,FIDA,National Council for Women Society ( NCWS) amongst other.
